Amuse-bouche Mini Dice - 7D Set

Ruby is a red dragon. She is the size of a teapot. She sleeps on a hoard of 36 dice, because she never managed to lift a ruby, and her fiery breath deals exactly 1 point of damage. Once, she attacked a knight. He thought someone was blowing on his soup.

Every autumn, the Thirsty Dwarf tavern hosts the Great Dragon Chefs Contest. The official judge is Brindamour, the pink dragon from Mont Grondeur with minty breath. He is paid in sugar. He is very strict about the sugar.

(The Dungeon Master, from behind the screen: the other contestants measured between twelve and forty metres. This year’s theme was “the amuse-bouche.” Nobody had checked what that meant.)

The first dragon breathed on a whole wild boar. Only charcoal was left. The second breathed on a pie. Only the plate was left, barely. The third melted Brindamour’s judging table; he wrote “insufficient mint” and disqualified him. By noon, the tavern kitchen looked like the crater of Ommadon-sur-Lave.

Then Ruby showed up with a tray. On it, seven tiny bites: a caramelized blueberry, a golden mushroom, a flambéed hazelnut, a little cube of cheese toasted just right. Each one had received exactly 1 point of fire damage. It was perfect. Brindamour tasted. He closed his eyes. He breathed out a little minty cloud of happiness.

The tavern keeper, who has never given a compliment in her life, tasted next. She chewed for a long time. Then she said: “Not bad.” The whole tavern stood up and applauded. It is the finest compliment in the tavern’s history.

(The Dungeon Master, with a smirk: first prize was a dragon-sized feast, three oxen and a cartload of apples. Ruby asked if there was a teapot-sized version. There is now. It’s called “the Ruby menu.”)

To thank her, Brindamour gave her seven teeny dice in the colours of her bites: blueberry blue, caramel brown, flambéed orange. The Amuse-bouche mini dice (“bite-sized appetizer”) were born. They’re so small that Ruby can finally sleep on a hoard her own size.
