Praline is a little filly from the stables of the castle of Hautepierre. She has a pink, yellow and blue mane, she’s smaller than a sheepdog, and one day she single-hoofedly chased away the mouse that was terrorizing the king’s three great warhorses: Thunder, Crash and Destroyer. Since then, they leave her the best bale of hay.

Every summer, Hautepierre holds the great Summer Festival: jousting, music, crêpes and the famous Race of the Steeds. This year, Praline wanted to race. The stable master laughed. Then he saw her eyes. He stopped laughing.

(The Dungeon Master, from behind the screen: Lancelin, the guard who guarded the broom closet for 30 years, volunteered to ride her. He’s 1.90 metres tall. Praline is 1.10 metres. Lancelin’s feet touched the ground. He said it was “more stable.”)

The race began. The big steeds took off like cannonballs. Praline took off like a filly, which is to say, hopping. At the first turn, she saw the crêpe stand. She stopped. Lancelin kept running, alone, on foot, out of loyalty. At the second turn, she saw children throwing coloured powder, an old festival tradition. She ran right into it.

She came out pink, yellow and blue from head to hooves, matching her mane. The children cheered. They followed her. Then the musicians. Then the jugglers. When Praline crossed the finish line, dead last, she had a parade of two hundred dancing people behind her. The big steeds had finished an hour earlier. Nobody had seen them.

The king had to make a decision. He gave the winner’s medal to Thunder. Then he created a new prize, just for Praline: “Best Festival of the Festival.” Lancelin arrived ten minutes later, on foot, out of breath, holding the bridle.

(The Dungeon Master, writing it down in their notebook: Thunder gave his medal to Praline that very evening. He said she had raced with more heart. Really, he was afraid she’d find him another mouse.)

The next day, they swept up the coloured powder in the castle square. At the bottom of the pile were seven white dice splashed with pastel pink, yellow and blue, like a filly after the party. The Festival d’été dice (“summer festival”) were born. They’re perfect for sunny game nights, little heroes who finish last and players who always stop at the crêpe stand.

In white resin splashed with pink, yellow and blue, these polyhedral dice are perfect for your Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder or any roleplaying game (RPG). A dice set that smells like crêpes and late July.
