On a map beautifully illustrated in the style of the period, you move your troops from town to town and road to road, never quite sure what the enemy camp is hiding: each unit is represented by a wooden block whose strength stays secret until the enemy engages it in combat. That veil of uncertainty, a true fog of war, turns every move into a calculated gamble and every battle into a moment of pure tension.

First published in 1972, Quebec 1759 was the very first game to use this block system, which has since become a wargaming staple known as the Columbia Block System. Instead of cardboard counters, sturdy wooden blocks take up positions on the map, turned to reveal or hide their strength depending on the losses taken in combat.

Small box, big reputation: Quebec 1759 was named to Games magazine's Top 100 Games list three times (1980, 1985, and 1986), and it remains, half a century after its release, one of the reference points of the block wargame genre. The game revisits a turning point in the history of Quebec City, the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, which cost the lives of both the British and French commanding generals.

The game is credited to Tom Dalgliesh, Lance Gutteridge, and Steve Brewster, three enthusiasts who met at the Simon Fraser University chess club before founding the company that became Columbia Games. Their block system, launched with Quebec 1759, went on to inspire a long line of wargames favored by genre fans.
