The Northwest Passage has fascinated explorers since the 15th century: this legendary sea route, said to link the Pacific and Atlantic oceans through Arctic ice, swallowed up countless expeditions before finally giving up its secrets. The Frozen Passage invites you to take on this historic challenge as a team, in a cooperative game where every card you place can tip the fate of the whole crew.

Around the table, players work together to build an inverted pyramid of 15 hexagonal cards, split into three colors numbered 1 to 9, starting at the base and working up toward the goal cards at the top. The catch: every hand is hidden. You have to guess what your teammates are holding, follow strict placement rules, and pass along information despite limited communication. One wrong move and the convoy drifts toward the iceberg... luckily, six kinds of items, like the dog sled, the wireless radio, or the lifeboat, can sometimes save the day.

It all plays out in a strikingly beautiful setting: the cards feature an aurora-style finish with silver foil accents, and slot into iceberg-shaped stands that make the table look like a genuine channel carved through the pack ice.

You'll probably love The Frozen Passage if you're drawn to deduction games rather than luck-driven ones, if a 20-minute session fits perfectly between other activities, and if you like games that work equally well solo or with a full table of 4. Fans of limited-communication games, where every clue counts, will find a genuine team puzzle here.

Released in 2026, first in Japan and showcased at Tokyo Game Market before its North American debut at Gen Con, The Frozen Passage stands out for its premium components: metallic-finish cards and sculpted iceberg-shaped stands, a visual signature rarely seen in cooperative games of this compact size.

The game was designed by Emi Kuji, while Rie Komatsuzaki and Rie Takahashi created the icy visual identity that gives this crossing its charm. It is published by Oink Games.
