Niwashi (FR) puts you in charge of tending the gardens of Nantoka-Ji. Together, you must help the garden evolve through the seasons and complete as many objectives as possible, but one rule completely changes how you play: you cannot communicate directly about your objectives. In this 2-player cooperative game, every tile placement and visual clue can reveal an intention to your partner.

On your turn, you place a Garden tile made of three plots representing the seasons or sand. These tiles work like triple dominoes: they are placed orthogonally and must cover one or two plots already in the garden. Gradually, your Japanese garden game takes shape, and certain patterns match the secret objectives you are trying to complete. The challenge is that your partner must understand what you are building without you simply telling them what you need.

When gestures and tile placement are not enough, the Lantern becomes your valuable communication tool. Its position can subtly direct your partner toward an important plot or configuration. Niwashi becomes a fascinating limited communication game where observation, interpretation, and teamwork matter just as much as logic. The more often you play together, the more you can develop your own unspoken language around the table.

Once you have mastered the basic principles, the Voyage mode expands the experience with a series of gardens and challenges featuring different restrictions, including limited play areas and blocked plots. This mode creates a satisfying sense of progression in this compact tile placement game, encouraging partners to improve their communication from one challenge to the next.

You will enjoy Niwashi if you like cooperative games designed specifically for two, approachable logic challenges, and experiences where understanding your partner is more important than simply optimizing your own turn. Its relatively short play time and silent communication mechanism make it especially appealing for couples, friends, or regular gaming partners looking for an unusual challenge to tackle together.

The Japanese word "niwashi" means gardener, making it a particularly fitting name for an experience built entirely around creating a garden together. The theme is more than decoration: silence, attention to your partner, and the garden's gradual evolution work naturally alongside the game's silent cooperation mechanism.

Niwashi was designed by Gautier de Cottreau and Baptiste Laurent, with illustrations by Yoshito Fujiwara. Published by Arkham Society, the game combines a clean presentation with a clever mechanism in which every action on the table can become a message for your partner.
