A rose and mauve winter sky wraps around the scene: the Pointe-au-Pere lighthouse stands tall and white, capped with its red lantern room, on the edge of the St. Lawrence River in Rimouski. A few coastal buildings surround it, including one with sharp modern architectural lines, rounding out the picture. In the foreground, chunks of ice drift on the calm water, a mark of the deep cold of the Bas-Saint-Laurent region, while the setting sun sets the horizon ablaze in pastel tones. This 1000-piece puzzle captures a suspended moment between sky, ice and sea, typical of the winter landscapes along the Gaspe coastline.

The Pointe-au-Pere lighthouse, built in 1909, stands 33 metres tall and ranks as the second-tallest lighthouse in the country, just behind the one at Cap-des-Rosiers, in the Gaspe region. Its octagonal, buttressed reinforced-concrete tower is the work of French engineer Henri de Miffonis. Designated a national historic site since 1974, the location is now home to the Site historique maritime de la Pointe-au-Pere, which tells the maritime history of the St. Lawrence River.

The image on this puzzle was captured by Jean-Christophe Lemay, a photographer based in Rimouski since 2010. Passionate about wildlife and seascapes from the Bas-Saint-Laurent and Gaspe regions, he was awarded Canadian Geographic's Canadian Wildlife Photographer of the Year Grand Prize in 2023. This scene is part of a collection dedicated to the country's most beautiful landscapes.
