Even in fantasy worlds, wars leave behind battlefields strewn with fallen creatures. That is where you step in: put on your gravedigger's outfit and finally grant eternal rest to goblins, imps, unicorns, cyclopes and dragons. Le Croque Monstre (a French-language game) is a delightful card game with a macabre yet playful theme where every shovelful counts.
On your turn, you place two domino cards: the first goes into your own narrow crypt, safely tucked away, while the second expands the common pit that everyone shares. You try to build continuous groups of the same category in both zones to bank points. Careful: each category scores only once per game, and its values are unique (2, 4, 6 or 10 points). As soon as an opponent claims a value, it disappears for everyone. This placement game forces gut-wrenching choices every turn.
Will you rush in, scoring quickly across the five categories to trigger the end of the game, or take your time to build larger, more rewarding sets at the risk of being cut off? Le Croque Monstre blends tension, dark humour and tactical decisions into short, biting games.
