Pack your bento box and spread out the picnic blanket: the cherry trees are in bloom! In Hanami (FR), a light strategy game for 2 to 4 players, you picnic in parks across Japan and Tokyo, where everyone is looking for the best spot under the sakura. On your turn, you place a tile to reserve a spot near the activities you care about: viewing cherry blossoms, enjoying onigiri or spending an evening under the lanterns.

Each tile represents the strength of your group, and Celebration tokens are collected once they are surrounded by tiles. Whoever is strongest there wins them! The tile placement asks you to balance your strength, watch your opponents and pick the right moment. At the end, you earn victory tokens for each activity where you dominate. The game offers two ways to play: the Japan map uses the classic Samurai rules, while the Tokyo map adds new challenges, new abilities and new tiles.

Hanami is for you if you enjoy majority games where every placement counts, but prefer simple rules and 45-minute games. You will probably also enjoy this game if you know Samurai and want to rediscover it in a calm and colourful setting.

Hanami is a new version of Samurai, a classic designed by Reiner Knizia. This reimagining tells a new story, that of meals under the blooming cherry trees, with illustrations by Lisk Feng and Ichiraku Shinhanga Seisakusho, inspired by Japanese prints.
