Across the colourful surface of this 1000-piece jigsaw puzzle, Vancouver comes to life. The city's name appears in bold hand-lettered script at the centre of the composition, surrounded by a mosaic of scenes and symbols that tell its story: the trees and totem pole of Stanley Park, the Lions Gate Bridge outlined against forested mountains, an inukshuk and a second brightly coloured totem pole, plus the Capilano Suspension Bridge tucked into the forest. A jogger, two cyclists and an articulated bus animate the streets, while a bowl of noodles and teacups evoke the buzz of Chinatown, recognizable by its traditional red gate. In the background rises the downtown skyline with its towers and the distinctive dome of Science World, while the harbour holds sailboats, a canoe and a small excursion boat. Farida Zaman is the illustrator behind this artwork. Born in Bangladesh and now based in Toronto, she has lived in the United Kingdom and the United States before settling in Canada, a journey that shapes her joyful, colourful style. She works in watercolour, gouache, acrylic and digital illustration, and her work appears everywhere from children's books to products for the Toronto Transit Commission and publishers such as Orca Book Publishers and Owlkids Books.
