In Dragons of Etchinstone, you play a young apprentice mage who leaves the Tower to investigate the return of dragons to Vale: the elder mages have charged you with cleansing the land of these legendary creatures, but you'll first need to survive the monster-infested regions in your way. Armed with nothing but sixteen action cards, you take on four hostile regions before facing the dragon guarding each one, in a solo card game that fits in the palm of your hand. Every clash against a Journey or an Enemy is a blind gamble: win it to earn experience and upgrade your cards, or pay the price, lost time that forces the final battle sooner or damage that weakens your hand. No dice, no chips: just your judgment and tight card management to bring peace back to Vale.
You'll probably love Dragons of Etchinstone if you're after a solo pocket game small enough to slip into a bag for a break or a commute, if you enjoy tight tactical puzzles where every card played has to be weighed carefully, and if the idea of taking on legendary dragons with just a handful of components makes you grin instead of flinch.
A fun twist for a game from Chip Theory Games, a brand best known for its oversized poker chips: Dragons of Etchinstone uses no dice and no chips at all, running purely on its action cards. Originally a print-and-play title that became a cult classic, it took first place for Best Artwork and third place overall in the Best Solo Game category at BoardGameGeek's 2022 In-Hand Game Design Contest, before being reimagined in a full-production edition with brand-new artwork.
The game comes from designer Joe Klipfel, also known for co-designing Gloomhaven: Buttons and Bugs and for his very first print-and-play release, Gloomholdin', which launched his career in pocket-sized games. The artwork is by Bree Lindsoe and Federico Pompili, who bring the dragons and mages of Vale to life.
