On the island of Catan, the race to colonize now happens with cards in hand, in just 30 minutes. CATAN: Le Jeu de Cartes (FR) condenses the spirit of the world's best-known resource-management game into a fast, portable format, built for a tight two-player duel or a game with more players. Each player starts with two villages connected by a road, plus a hand of resource cards representing clay, wood, ore, wool and grain. Each turn, a die spins your resource cards to show your gains, while a second die triggers events that can help you or hurt your opponents: a productive year, civil war, plague, or the arrival of a master builder. With your resources, you buy new roads, grow your villages into cities, and recruit knights to rack up victory points. The game's signature twist: unlike the board game, opponents can flat-out steal your roads and knights during play, keeping the race for victory points uncertain right down to the last card placed.

You'll probably love CATAN: Le Jeu de Cartes if you're a fan of the Catan universe but want a faster version you can pull out on a weeknight or pack in a bag or suitcase. Fans of tight two-player tactical duels will find a sharp head-to-head built around resource management, while groups of 3 or 4 players get an equally biting variant. CATAN: Le Jeu de Cartes draws directly from the Catan universe, whose original board game won the prestigious Spiel des Jahres in 1995 and has since become one of the best-selling and most-translated board games in the world. This card format brings its own strategic flavor: by leaning on stealing constructions rather than pure accumulation, it adds a layer of tension the original board game doesn't have, making it a distinct experience in its own right for longtime fans.

The game was designed by Klaus Teuber, the creator of Catan, who built this card adaptation to give players a different way to explore his signature universe; he's also behind Rivals for Catan and many expansions in the series. The artwork, notably by Franz Vohwinkel, carries the same warm visual style fans know from the franchise.
