Catan: Explorers & Pirates (FR) sends you well beyond the shores of the Catan you already know. This major Catan expansion introduces three separate islands, two of which stay hidden until your ships explore them hex by hex. Every sea tile you reveal can hide a valuable resource, a shoal of silvery fish, or even a distant spice village ready to trade.
Forget simple roads: here you build ships to ferry settlers to new lands, then found harbor settlements that score victory points while producing resources. A new currency, gold, rewards you whenever a production roll leaves you empty-handed, and can be spent to buy any resource you want or to bribe your way past marauding pirates. Because pirates do roam between the islands: pay them tribute or hunt down their lairs before they turn on your ships.
The expansion includes five progressive scenarios, from the simplest (Land Ho!) to the full Explorers and Pirates scenario that combines exploration, fishing, spice trading and pirate hunting. Each scenario can be played on its own or chained together into a true island campaign that unfolds turn after turn.
You'll probably love Catan: Explorers & Pirates if you've already sailed around your starting island and you're itching to head into the unknown. Strategy fans who enjoy a dash of adventure, negotiation and a pinch of luck will love rediscovering Catan from a nautical angle, mixing off-the-map exploration with the occasional run-in with pirates who don't play nice. If you like expansions that truly reshape the experience instead of just adding two more pawns, this one just might become your favorite island.
Explorers & Pirates is the fourth major Catan expansion, following Seafarers, Cities & Knights and Traders & Barbarians. Unlike earlier expansions, it swaps roads for ships and cities for harbor settlements, a fairly bold mechanical shift for a series that helped launch the modern board game hobby back in 1995. Its five scenarios ease players into the new rules step by step before the final scenario brings every mechanic together.
This expansion comes from Klaus Teuber, the creator of Catan and most of its expansions, including Seafarers and Cities & Knights. The artwork carries the signature of Michael Menzel and Harald Lieske, known for the warm look of Catan's boards and cards.
To play Explorers & Pirates, you need a copy of Catan - Le jeu de base (the French-language base game). At 2, 3 or 4 players, that combination alone is enough. To seat 5 or 6 players, you'll also need both the Catan - Extension 5-6 joueurs (the base game's own add-on) and the Catan - Ext. Pirates et Découvreurs 5-6 joueurs, this expansion's dedicated add-on.
