Catan: Explorers & Pirates is the fourth major expansion in the Catan universe, and it completely transforms how you explore the island. Instead of a single known island, you set sail toward uncharted territories, build ships, and bring settlers to discover new lands. Every revealed hex hides a resource, a shoal of fish, spices, or gold, turning each game into a sprawling maritime expedition full of twists.

This expansion differs from the base game in three key ways. First, you build port settlements instead of cities, each worth two victory points and serving as a springboard for further exploration. Second, whenever a production roll gives you nothing, you receive gold as compensation, a precious currency for trading or escaping pirates. Third, the game offers five scenarios and three missions that chain together into a progressive campaign, from gentle introduction to demanding finale.

You begin with Land Ho!, an introductory scenario where you discover two new islands and ferry settlers to distant shores. Then come Pirate Lairs!, where you hunt and capture enemy lairs for gold and points, and Fish for Catan!, where you bring fish back to feed the island. Spices for Catan! has you befriend the inhabitants of the Spice Islands before the grand finale, Explorers and Pirates!, which brings every challenge together into one epic adventure.
