The sky blazes with violet and orange hues at dusk above the famous red monolith of Uluru, deep in the Australian outback. This 1000-piece jigsaw puzzle captures the moment the sun, still visible just above the horizon, casts a final golden light across the arid plain of the Northern Territory. In the foreground, tall golden grasses and scattered green shrubs stand out against the reddish earth, while the massive, ochre silhouette of the rock dominates the horizon, its walls carved by millennia of erosion. Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock, is a massive sandstone monolith that rises about 348 metres above the ground, with most of its bulk hidden underground. A sacred site for the Anangu people, the traditional custodians of this land, it is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, first for its natural value in 1987, then for its cultural value in 1994. The rock changes colour with the position of the sun, glowing red and orange at sunrise and sunset, exactly the moment captured in this puzzle. Since October 2019, climbing the rock has been banned out of respect for Anangu spiritual beliefs.
