Set on a grassy hill lined with leafy trees, a packed crowd of onlookers presses behind a scoreboard numbered 1 to 4, eyes locked on the mayhem tumbling down the slope below. Dozens of characters go sprawling in every direction: some tumble head over heels into the grass, others slide on their backs or grab onto each other, all chasing wheels of cheese rolling down the hill. Two dogs get tangled up in the chaos, a makeshift sled carries one character in the bottom left corner, and not a single inch of the scene escapes the mayhem: that is the signature of this 1000-piece jigsaw puzzle drawn by Jan van Haasteren, famous for crowds overflowing with visual gags waiting to be spotted one by one.

This frantic chase is inspired by a very real English tradition, the Cooper's Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake: every year, a wheel of Double Gloucester cheese is sent rolling down a steep hill and competitors race after it all the way to the bottom, risking a few spectacular falls along the way. Van Haasteren carries that legendary scramble into his own universe, with the same overflowing energy found in the hundreds of other comic puzzles he has released over the decades.
