On the table, a wobbly pyramid grows turn after turn: a sturdy crocodile forms the base, then a toucan, a sheep, a winding snake, and a monkey clinging on however it can join the pile. Animal Upon Animal is a stacking game where every wooden piece has its own shape and its own balancing challenge: the slightest slip sends the whole tower crashing down in a burst of laughter. Each turn, the die decides what happens next: place one or two animals on the tower, hand one off to an opponent to place instead, or extend the base on the table to give everyone more options. Easy to explain in thirty seconds yet fiercely addictive from the very first round, this dexterity game can be played standing, sitting, around the kitchen table or right on the living room floor: the only real opponent is gravity.

The game's creator, Klaus Miltenberger, was inspired by wooden animals he spotted at a toy inventors' fair in Munich, then refined the concept after watching children stack all sorts of objects on a hike. His original idea, nicknamed Piggyback at first, grew into one of the most recognizable stacking games on the market, spawning a whole family of sequels and variants built around the same idea.
