In Amarok, logic alone will not save you. Inspired by Amarok, the giant wolf spirit from Inuit mythology, this bluffing game challenges you to watch the other players, anticipate their intentions, and sometimes trust your instincts instead of making the obvious move. Each round, your goal is to finish with two cards that form the winning combination, but your opponents' decisions can completely disrupt your plans.
On your turn, you can choose a card from several locations: your own hand, the River in the centre of the table, the top of the deck, or even an opponent's hand by blindly stealing a card. Depending on the current objective, you want the highest combined value to form the Wolf Pack or the lowest combined value to become the Lone Wolf. A Change of Season card can suddenly reverse that objective during the round. This deduction game turns an accessible card system into a psychological contest where you constantly have to reconsider what everyone else is trying to accomplish.
Special cards create even more dramatic twists. A Claw can destroy a card, two Hearts can trigger an immediate victory, and a Wolf Trap can prevent a player from winning the round. The closer you get to victory, the more Amarok tests your instincts: after winning two rounds, you must hold your cards facing away from yourself. From that point on, memory, reading your opponents, and the clues around the table become increasingly important. The first player to win three rounds reaches the sacred paw print and wins the game.
Amarok is for you if you want a fast card game that creates plenty of player interaction without complicated rules. It is particularly well suited to groups that enjoy bluffing, challenging their friends, figuring out hidden intentions, and watching a seemingly secure position change in seconds. With games lasting around 20 minutes, it is also easy to play an immediate rematch. A team mode is included for 4 players in a 2 versus 2 format or 6 players in a 2 versus 2 versus 2 format, offering another way to test teamwork and observation.
The name Amarok refers to the giant wolf spirit in Inuit mythology. Publisher Subverti presents the game as an experience built around balancing instinct and strategy. Development began in summer 2024 and continued through numerous testing, modification, and balancing sessions before the game's 2026 release. With only two cards to place in front of you each round, Amarok uses streamlined rules to create tension, bluffing, and sudden reversals.
Amarok was designed by Charlène Chaps and illustrated by Baptiste Perez. The artwork reinforces the game's wolf theme and wild atmosphere, while Subverti, an independent publishing house founded in Toulouse in 2018, is behind the original edition.
