*French version
Tie on your apron and get ready for a completely unhinged cooking night: in A la carte (FR), you play a slightly deranged chef trying to season your dishes to perfection without ever overdoing it. On your turn, you can crank up the heat on your stove, tip a small bottle of colored pellets to sprinkle spices onto your pan, or flat-out steal a distracted opponent's recipe in progress. The catch: spices fall wherever they want, and if more than two pellets spill out at once, your dish goes straight into the trash! Between probability math, friendly sabotage and guaranteed laughs, this dexterity game turns every meal into an all-out culinary duel. The first chef to score three stars, or whoever has the most points when the pot runs dry, wins the title of best cook at the table.
A la carte is for you if you love party games that spike your adrenaline with every pellet you tip, if messing with your neighbor's recipe sounds like a good time, and if you are looking for a family game night pick that is as easy to learn as it is hilarious to play, no matter who is sitting around the table.
A la carte was nominated for the prestigious Spiel des Jahres in 2010, Germany's top honor for family board games, and also earned the Spiele Hit fur Familien title that same year. Its very first version, released back in 1989, had already snagged second place at the Goldener Poppel the following year. That is rare staying power for a game where pouring spices just right can make or break the whole match.
The game is designed by Karl-Heinz Schmiel, a German designer also known for Die Macher, a cult-classic political strategy game. With A la carte, he swaps pure strategy for humor and improvisation, proving a great head chef of games knows how to make you laugh just as well as think.
