The world sometimes feels like it is going up in flames, and that is exactly the playground of Shit Happens: Monde en feu (FR). This Quebec French edition of the cult party game by Goliath drops you into a whirlwind of situations as absurd as they are downright unpleasant, inspired by the worst turns of world events. The concept stays true to the formula that made the series popular everywhere: each card drawn describes a particularly unfortunate event, and you have to guess where it ranks on the misery index, from 1 (barely a bother) all the way to 100 (total catastrophe).

On your turn, you draw a card and slide it into the right spot among the ones already in front of you, relying on your gut feel for just how unlucky each situation is. Guess correctly and the card stays in your sequence; guess wrong and you will have to try your luck again next turn. The first person to correctly line up ten cards in ascending order of misery wins the game. Easy to explain, tricky to master: every new card sparks fresh debates and fresh laughs around the table, a real card game built to be played out loud.

Fun fact: Shit Happens started life as a Kickstarter campaign launched in 2016 before becoming an international hit, eventually inspiring a 2019 American TV show called The Misery Index, aired on TBS. Its creator, writer and comedian Andy Breckman, is also known as the creator of the popular TV series Monk. Since then, the franchise has grown into several themed editions, and Monde en feu adds its own biting twist to this ever-expanding family.

This game plays on its own with its own box, or combines with the Shit Happens - Edition Quebec base game to stretch the fun and shuffle in even more cards around the table.
