Alexander the Great and Darius's vast Persian army clash in Pocket Battles: Macedonians vs. Persians, a two-player tile-based war game small enough to fit in a pocket. Each side lines up its troops in three columns and two rows, then you agree on how many army points are at stake: the first army to lose at least half of its points is defeated.
On your turn, you choose which section of your army goes into battle. Order tokens pay for each action: a unit with no token costs 1 token, and giving more orders to the same unit during the same round always costs one more than the tokens it already carries. Between rounds, you can redeploy your units, from the back row to the front or from one column to another, without spending tokens. The battle dice add tension, and since you build your army for every battle, no two games feel the same.
Macedonians vs. Persians is for you if you enjoy two-player strategy games, if ancient history and the battles of Alexander fascinate you, or if you want a tactical duel of about 30 minutes that is easy to carry around. The combat rules are the same across the Pocket Battles series, so you can pit armies from different boxes against each other, like elves against Romans.
The game is designed by Paolo Mori and Francesco Sirocchi, with illustrations by Karim Chakroun. It was released in 2012.
