Welcome to Nijar, a small whitewashed town in the province of Almería, Spain, bathed by the waters of Cabo de Gata. It is the 1920s: the local economy revolves around ceramics, esparto weaving and jarapas, those colorful textiles. You run your own pottery workshop and keep the potter's wheels spinning until the sun goes down.
In this strategy game, you expand your workshop by adding new wheels to produce more pieces. You extract clay, throw pots, fire them, paint them, then sell them at the market. The game is played over three rounds, with a decreasing number of action discs: 7, then 6, then 5. On your turn, you place craftswomen on an action space (one more than those already there, which sends the others back to their owners), discard a final scoring card to perform the action of your choice, sell up to two fired pieces for victory points, or close your shop for the round and take a bonus token.
Your workshop cards, your secret scoring cards and the fluctuating market prices call for solid hand management and a good sense of timing. Prefer to play alone? The solo mode pits you against an automated opponent, la competencia, for 1 to 4 players in total.
You will probably enjoy Nijar if you like strategy games where every action sets up the next one, if you enjoy production chains and if you like optimizing your personal tableau from round to round. The game is language independent, except for the rulebook.
Fun fact: the coins in the game are perras gordas. At the time, the peseta was the currency of Spain and its tenth part was nicknamed the perra gorda, because the lion engraved on the coin wore down until it was barely recognizable.
Nijar is designed by David Bernal, author of Salton Sea and Tholos, and illustrated by Jorge Tabanera Redondo, who also illustrated Cities and Conservas.
