Mystery of the Abbey - Second Edition (EN)

Deep in the hushed corridors of a medieval abbey, a monk lies dead at the foot of the cliffs. Accident or murder? Mystery of the Abbey drops 3 to 6 players into an investigation that is as clever as it is theatrical, where every question asked out loud becomes a clue for the whole table. Somewhere between Clue and The Name of the Rose, this cult deduction game slips you into the robes of a monk detective tasked with unmasking the culprit among twenty-four suspects, each defined by five precise traits: order, rank, build, facial hair, and whether or not they wear a hood.
On your turn, you move your pawn through the abbey and question another monk sharing your room. That monk then has a choice: answer truthfully, risking giving away too much, or take a vow of silence, which looks just as suspicious to everyone listening. Every four rounds, the mass bell rings and gathers the community for a card exchange and an unexpected event that shakes up everyone's certainties. Better yet, you do not need to be first to accuse to win: correctly revealing a trait during the game earns points too, rewarding sharp thinking as much as speed.
This reprint from Mojito Studios breathes new life into a classic first published in 1995 by Bruno Faidutti and Serge Laget, then popularized in 2003 by Days of Wonder. The board and cards get an entirely new art direction, the Templar monks give way to Dominicans as in the very first edition, and the Crypt module becomes its own expansion instead of a base-game add-on.
Mystery of the Abbey is for you if you love evenings where atmosphere matters as much as strategy, if you enjoy bluffing, reading your friends' suspicious silences, and piecing together a suspect's profile bit by bit. Groups of 4 to 6 players looking for a chatty, social investigation game, Clue fans craving more depth, and anyone who wants a classic finally given its due will feel right at home.
Thirty years after it first appeared, this classic remains a benchmark on BoardGameGeek, with over 8000 ratings and a spot among the site's top family games. The new edition is more than a simple facelift: it swaps the Templars for Dominicans, staying true to the very first 1995 French edition, and frees the base game from the Crypt module, now offered as a separate expansion.
Mystery of the Abbey comes from Bruno Faidutti, also known for Citadels and Diamant, and Serge Laget, a major figure in French board game design. The new art direction comes from Naïade, already noted for their work on Tokaido and Seasons, giving the abbey a warm, immersive look.
