Take a deep breath and let the rain do its work. You have come to the edge of a lake hoping to witness a rare sight: the water lilies only open their blossoms in the rain, and it is exceptional to see all eight varieties bloom at once. Your goal in A Gentle Rain (L'odeur de la pluie) is simple and soothing: place the lake tiles so that all eight types of lilies bloom before the rain stops.

Each turn, you draw a tile and place it next to a tile already in play, matching the colors of every edge that touches. Each time you complete a square of four tiles, a blossom opens at its center. This solo game of tile placement plays in about fifteen minutes, with or without scoring, and set-up is nearly instant. This Bloom Edition (Nouvelle floraison) features eight sculpted blossoms, as pleasant to look at as they are to handle. The game is designed first for one player, but the rules also allow group play by taking turns placing tiles.

A Gentle Rain is for you if you are looking for a calm, zen thinking game to unwind after a long day, a fifteen-minute break with no pressure and no opponent. You will probably enjoy this game if you like color puzzles, cozy atmospheres and games that are easy to set up and put away, even while traveling or on your bedside table.

For the curious: the Bloom Edition of A Gentle Rain was released in 2024, three years after the original 2021 game, and the game has been published in several languages. Its tile placement and pattern building make this little game a fine example of a cozy game built for relaxation.

The game is by Kevin Wilson, who also designed the Kinfire series (Kinfire Chronicles, Kinfire Delve and Kinfire Council). The soft lake and water lily illustrations are by Wiktor Kozyra.
