In Kano (FR), you become a painter from old Japan and compose your own emakimono, a traditional painted handscroll, by lining up vibrant paint pots. This strategy game of tile placement blends resource management with spatial optimization, in a calm and colorful atmosphere inspired by Japanese art.

On your turn, you may swap two adjacent pots on the central mat, then take at least one pot, or several if they are the same color and lined up in a single row or column. On your board, pots always fall to the lowest open space in their column, so every move needs planning. Once a pattern is complete, you replace your pots with beautiful artwork tiles. If you end your turn with more than four visible pots on your board, the extras become Cloud tiles, which fill space but score no points.

Larger artworks earn more points (7 points for a 3-space artwork), your secret Masterpiece cards are worth 12 points each, and the red and white goal sheets renew the challenge every game. The game peaks when one player completely fills their board: a final scoring round then crowns the Master Artist.

Kano (FR) is for you if you enjoy visual puzzles where every placement counts, if you like accessible strategy games with a soothing mood, or if you want a game that plays just as well solo as with two, three or four players.

A 2026 release, Kano plays 1 to 4 players, solo included. Its box holds a fabric game mat and a plastic storage tray, for a tidy setup and components worthy of a work of art.

Kano is designed by Angel Pintero and Pablo Jiménez, with illustrations by Jun Sato, a Kyoto artist who brings the tradition of Japanese painted handscrolls to life.
