Inis (FR) drops you into ancient Ireland, in a time when history and mythology are one and the same. Your clan has just landed on a newly discovered island, and the Assembly is about to elect its very first king. Each season, you draft a hand of four Action cards from a wide range of options: move your clans, raise sanctuaries and citadels, spark conflicts, or trigger epic tales inspired by Celtic gods and heroes such as Cuchulainn, the Dagda, and Lugh. These cards never carry over from one season to the next, so every round demands that you read your opponents' intentions, bluff at the right moment, and know when to pass to keep the upper hand. Three paths lead to the throne: dominate contested territories by clan count, spread your presence across at least six different lands, or gather the religious fervor of at least six sanctuaries. Inis is a strategy game where diplomacy and reading the table matter as much as territorial expansion: wiping out a rival clan often works against you, since the Leadership victory rewards presence, not destruction.
You'll likely love Inis if you crave strategy games where negotiation and card drafting outweigh dice luck. Fans of territory-control games with an immersive atmosphere, where every decision hinges on the cards the other players are holding, will find Inis a rich and highly replayable playground. Do plan for a first discovery game before the full depth of the system clicks, and set aside some time with your regular group to dive in properly.
Inis made a splash right out of the gate: it was a finalist for Board Game of the Year at the 2016 Golden Geek Awards, and was also nominated in the Best Strategy Board Game category that same year. It went on to be a finalist for the SXSW Tabletop Game of the Year in 2017. Part of that critical success comes from its non-permanent card system: since your hand of four cards doesn't carry over between seasons, no one can plan too far ahead, keeping every assembly tense and unpredictable.
The game is designed by Christian Martinez, also behind Galactic Renaissance, available at As des jeux. The artwork comes from Dimitri Bielak and Jim FitzPatrick, whose style directly evokes Celtic art and ancient illuminated manuscripts, deepening the immersion the moment you open the box.
