In this striking image, the granite spires of Fitz Roy pierce a deep blue sky, their snow-capped peaks glowing in the golden light of early morning. Below, the hillsides are dressed in copper and orange hues, autumn vegetation that contrasts with the blue shadow still draped over the valley floor. Fitz Roy, also known as Cerro Chalten, rises more than 3400 meters on the border between Argentina and Chile, at the heart of Los Glaciares National Park. Its name comes from a Tehuelche word meaning smoking mountain, a nod to the cloud that almost always forms around its summit. Despite a modest height compared to the world's tallest giants, this near-vertical wall of granite, swept by Patagonia's fierce winds, remains one of the most feared peaks among climbers: it was not conquered until 1952, by French climbers Lionel Terray and Guido Magnone.
