After the fall of the four great dragons of Etchinstone, peace does not last long in Vale. In Dragons of Etchinstone: Northvale, you leave behind the young apprentice of the base game to play as one of four elder mages of the Tower, one representative from each elemental guild in the land. Each mage carries unique powers and personal weaknesses that shape how you play. Brand new action cards replace those of the base game to build a whole new tactical puzzle, as you make your way through four uncharted regions, from a storm-torn coastline to icy northern foothills, before facing one of four new bosses guarding them. Still just as compact, this solo expansion fits in the palm of your hand, even stacked on top of the base game.

You'll probably love Dragons of Etchinstone: Northvale if you have already proven yourself against the base game's four dragons and want a fresh challenge, if you thrive on tight hand management where every card matters, and if the idea of replaying the adventure with four distinct mage personalities makes you want to head back to Vale.

Released in 2024, Northvale is the very first expansion in the Dragons of Etchinstone series, arriving two years after the base game and two years before the Siege expansion. It also marks a turning point for the series: it's the first time players take on a named mage with their own personality, instead of the anonymous apprentice from the original game. Warmly received by the community, it carries an average rating of about 8.3 out of 10 from BoardGameGeek players.

This expansion comes from designer Joe Klipfel, who also created the base game and the Siege expansion, once again joined by illustrators Bree Lindsoe and Federico Pompili, who bring the new mages, bosses, and regions of Vale to life.

To play, you will need the base game Dragons of Etchinstone, since Northvale adds its cards to the base deck rather than standing on its own.
