Schtroumpf Suprême Dice - 7D Set

Ruby is a red dragon. A real one, with scales, claws and fiery breath. She is the size of a teapot, and her fire does exactly one point of damage. She sleeps on a hoard of 36 dice in the Cave of a Thousand Treasures, and she has only one dream in life: to taste ice cream.

The problem is the fire. Every time Ruby gets near a cone, she gets a little excited, she breathes a little, and the ice cream melts. She tried vanilla: melted. Chocolate: melted. Strawberry: melted before it even reached the counter. To this day, Ruby has licked two hundred empty cones.

(The Dungeon Master, from behind the screen: at the ice cream stand in Saint-Glinglin, the house specialty is called the Schtroumpf Suprême. Seven scoops of blue ice cream, one cherry, and nobody in the village has ever been able to say what it tastes like. People say “it tastes blue.” That’s enough.)

One Saturday in July, Ruby decided this would be the big day. She practised holding her breath all week. She showed up at the counter red as a tomato, cheeks puffed out, and pointed at the Schtroumpf Suprême with her claw. The vendor served her all seven scoops. Ruby held on for ten seconds. Then twenty. Then, to be quick about it, she took one enormous bite all at once.

It was cold. Very cold. Far too cold for a dragon. Ruby got the most violent brain freeze in the history of the kingdom. She froze solid, eyes round, mouth wide open. And when she finally breathed out, it wasn’t fire that came out. It was a little cloud of blue frost.

Ruby looked at her breath. The vendor looked at her breath. The whole counter was covered in frost. For the first time in her life, Ruby had made something cold. She finished her entire Schtroumpf Suprême, slowly, breathing frost on it between bites so it would stay nice and hard.

(The Dungeon Master, with a smirk: ever since, the vendor hires Ruby every summer as a freezer. She’s paid in ice cream. Her fire comes back as soon as she stops eating. She never stops.)

At the bottom of the last bowl, Ruby found seven little balls of blue ice cream, frozen so hard they will never melt again, with golden glints like the July sun. She added them to her hoard. The Schtroumpf Suprême dice (a “supreme Schtroumpf,” Quebec’s famous blue ice cream flavour) were born.
