Mirza is the fastest rogue in the kingdom. She can steal your boots while you’re walking. Only one person has ever caught her: Mamie Ginette, 94 years old, retired level 20 adventurer, who won three wars in four minutes without taking off her flowered apron. Mirza had tried to steal her secret recipe. She paid for it by peeling 10,000 potatoes. Ever since, she comes back every Sunday.
But Mirza had a plan. Every Sunday, while peeling, she watched. She now knew the house’s 47 traps by heart. And she had spotted a little blue tin box, on the highest shelf, where Mamie Ginette kept her second secret recipe: the one for her warm cookies. The most dangerous in the kingdom.
(The Dungeon Master, checking their notes: You disarm trap 31, the creaky floorboard. Roll Stealth. Success. The cat, however, didn’t roll. It meows.)
One Sunday, while Mamie Ginette napped in her rocking chair, Mirza got past all 47 traps in nine seconds. She climbed up to the shelf. She grabbed the box. She turned around. Mamie Ginette was still asleep… with one eye open. That was trap 48. Nobody knew it existed.
Mirza ran. Mamie Ginette didn’t get up. She just said: “Open it, dear.” Mirza opened the box. Inside was a handwritten card: “Warm cookies. Step 1: Come peel potatoes every Sunday. Step 2: Bring back my Tupperware. Step 3: I’ll show you.”
At the bottom of the box were also seven old emergency candies, caramel and turquoise, full of tiny glitter. They had been there since 1987. They had become as hard as dice.
(The Dungeon Master, trying not to laugh: Mirza still comes on Sundays. Now she’s the one who brings the potatoes. The Tupperware, however, she hasn’t brought back yet. Mamie Ginette knows.)
