Hortense is the gardener of the gods. She is 4,000 years old, wears a straw hat and has no patience at all. She tends the gardens of the Domain of the Gods, at the top of the highest mountain in the kingdom. Her great misfortune is the gods themselves: they tramp through her flower beds in muddy sandals and never wipe their feet.

For her birthday, the god of storms gave her a present: a little carnivorous plant, green and black, with a big mouth full of teeth. He thought it was funny. Hortense planted it at the garden entrance, right next to the doormat. Then she spent a week talking to it.

(The Dungeon Master, from behind the screen: I don’t know what Hortense said to the plant. Nobody knows. But by the end of the week, the plant had stopped eating flies. It only ate people who didn’t wipe their feet.)

The first one to come by was the god of storms himself. He stepped over the doormat. The plant swallowed him whole, lightning bolt and all. It kept him for an hour, then spat him out, all slimy, outside the garden. The god of war laughed. He stepped over the doormat. Swallowed. The goddess of love wanted to give them both a hug. She didn’t see the doormat. Swallowed too.

After a week, the plant had doubled in size. The gods lined up at the doormat and wiped their feet with unheard-of dedication. The god of war scrubbed his sandals for ten minutes. The god of storms brought his own brush. For the first time in 4,000 years, Hortense’s flower beds were clean.

One morning, Stavros arrived: the architect who built a temple while the gods played dice for two hundred years. He is the only one Hortense likes, because he always wipes his feet. He wiped his feet. The carnivorous plant leaned toward him… and licked his cheek. It was purring.

(The Dungeon Master, trying not to laugh: Hortense thought this was excellent. She is now growing a second plant, for people who talk too much while she works. The gods have started whispering.)

In the autumn, the carnivorous plant dropped seven green and black seeds, hard as stones, with golden glints like the gods’ sandals. Hortense polished them one by one. The Plante carnivore dice (“carnivorous plant”) were born. They’re perfect for druids, formidable gardeners and players who bite when they’re disturbed.

In green and black swirled acrylic with gold numbers, these polyhedral dice are perfect for your Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder or any roleplaying game (RPG). A dice set with an appetite. Wipe your feet.
