L'Ankou Dice - 7D Set

On the Brumevent Moor, there’s a figure everyone knows: the Ankou. Tall, thin, a black cape, a wide-brimmed hat and an old wooden cart. His job: come and collect souls when their time has come. His real name is Yannick. He’s very nice. And his cart squeaks.

It squeaks loudly. So loudly you can hear it coming three villages away. Squeeeak. Squeeeak. And when people hear it, they do what anyone would do: they hide. In the barn. Under the bed. Down the well.

(The Dungeon Master, checking their notes: You hear a squeak in the distance. Roll Stealth. The whole village rolls Stealth. The whole village succeeds. They’re used to it.)

The result: for forty years, nobody has died on the Brumevent Moor. People are 130 years old. They’re bored. They’ve finished all their puzzles. The cemetery had to close for lack of customers, and the gravedigger became a gardener. Yannick, meanwhile, makes his rounds for nothing, his cart empty.

He tried everything. Oil. Butter. Dragon grease. The cart squeaked even louder. One evening, discouraged, he took the wheel apart. Stuck in the hub, he found seven little clear dice, each with a bone-coloured skull inside. They rubbed against each other with every turn of the wheel. Squeeeak. An old gambler had left them there centuries ago, on his way into the cart.

(The Dungeon Master, trying not to laugh: The cart doesn’t squeak anymore. Bad news for the moor. Good news for the cemetery. Yannick still bought himself a little bell to warn people. Out of politeness.)
