Colonel Moutarde is a retired detective from Saint-Glinglin. He just can’t get over it: nothing ever happens in the village. So he invents crimes. Once, he ran a three-week investigation into the baron’s missing sandwich. He ended up arresting himself. He had been hungry that day.

One Saturday morning, at last, a real crime. At the Saint-Glinglin market, someone knocked over the cheesemonger’s stall, crushed three baskets of eggs, smashed through the blacksmith’s fence… and fled without leaving a name. A hit-and-run. Colonel Moutarde took out his magnifying glass, his notebook and his finest moustache. He was trembling with joy.

(The Dungeon Master, checking their notes: the witnesses weren’t very helpful. They had all seen “something round and blue” go by very fast. The Colonel wrote down: dragon, ghost, or small man in a great hurry wearing a blue coat. He underlined “dragon” three times.)

The Colonel followed the tracks. There were strange marks on the ground, like a wheel. They went down the main street, through the priest’s garden, across the schoolyard… All along the way, the culprit had left a strong smell. A very strong one. The Colonel sniffed. “The criminal hasn’t washed in weeks,” he concluded.

The trail kept going downhill. The Colonel ran, jumped over a fence, slipped in a puddle, and at the bottom of the hill, by the river, he finally saw the suspect. It was round. It was blue. It was motionless, stuck against a rock. It was a twenty-kilo wheel of blue cheese that had escaped from the cheesemonger’s stall and rolled all the way down the hill.

Colonel Moutarde approached slowly. He took out his handcuffs. He declared: “In the name of the law, I arrest you for hit-and-run.” The cheese did not resist. The trial was held that very evening in the village square. The cheese was found guilty and sentenced to be eaten at the village fair.

(The Dungeon Master, with a smirk: the sentence was carried out with great enthusiasm. The Colonel ate the evidence. He closed the case. He says it was the best investigation of his career. At least it had taste.)

The next day, at the bottom of the cheese platter, the Colonel found seven little black dice, marked with numbers as blue as the veins of a good cheese. He filed them as “evidence.” The Délit de fuite dice (“hit-and-run”) were born. They’re perfect for detectives, investigations on a roll and players whose dice always fall off the table.

In opaque black acrylic with blue numbers, these polyhedral dice are perfect for your Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder or any roleplaying game (RPG). A dice set that never runs away. Keep an eye on it anyway.
