Marine is a little mermaid. She sings beautifully, and she cheats a little. Not a lot. Just enough. When she sings, the people around her suddenly feel a strong urge to agree with her. She mostly uses it to win at dice against the old pirates of Fiddler’s Green, the meadow at the bottom of the sea.

Every spring, the creatures of the sea hold the great contest of the Couronne de Varech, the Kelp Crown. The winner wears a magnificent crown of green and blue seaweed, braided by hand, for a whole year. It’s very prestigious. It smells a bit like fish, but it’s very prestigious. Marine had never won. This year, she had a plan.

(The Dungeon Master, checking their notes: the jury is made up of three 180-year-old sea turtles. They vote slowly. Very slowly. Last year, the result was announced in August.)

On contest day, everyone was cheating. The octopus had stolen eight ballots, one per arm. The crab had cut the favourite’s hair. The sunfish was pretending to be the sun. Marine swam up to the three turtles, took a deep breath and sang the most beautiful song of her life, full of magic, so they would really, really want to vote for her.

The turtles didn’t move. They didn’t blink. Marine sang louder. She sang a second song, then a third. Nothing. After an hour, the oldest turtle raised her head and said, very slowly: “What?” All three turtles had been deaf as a post for a hundred years.

Discouraged, Marine sat down in a corner and played dice with the crab while waiting for the results. She won seven games in a row without singing a single note. The turtles, watching her out of the corner of their eyes, were very impressed: finally, someone who won without cheating. In August, they announced the winner. It was Marine.

(The Dungeon Master, with a smirk: Marine has worn the Kelp Crown ever since. She never admitted her dice were loaded. The turtles never found out. They didn’t hear the crab yelling about it for three weeks.)

When the crown dried, seven seaweed pearls fell from it, green and blue, swirled like the sea at noon. Marine kept them preciously. The Couronne de Varech dice (“kelp crown”) were born. They’re perfect for mermaids, queens of the sea and players who win… honestly. Almost.

In green and blue swirled acrylic with white numbers, these polyhedral dice are perfect for your Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder or any roleplaying game (RPG). A dice set fit for a queen. That smells a bit like fish.
