Blokus is an abstract strategy game where every piece you place redraws the map of the board. On a 400-square grid, you get 21 multicolored pieces, each a different shape, and your job is to fit as many as you can while eating into your opponents' territory at the same time. There is only one rule to remember: a new piece must always touch one of your own pieces at a corner, never along a side. Easy to explain in under a minute, this abstract strategy game hides surprising depth: every move opens some angles and closes others, turning the board into a living puzzle. No luck, no dice, no randomness: only pattern-reading and anticipation matter, which makes it a fierce classic for a casual family night and for a tight duel between seasoned players alike.

Its geometric piece-placement mechanic has been so successful that it spawned a whole family of spin-offs (a duo format, a triangular format, an oversized format), a rare longevity for a pure abstract game.

Blokus was designed by Bernard Tavitian, a French biophysicist who dreamed up this corner-touching concept before watching it become a must-have among abstract games, now distributed by Mattel. Its mathematical simplicity and visual elegance have turned it into a reference studied in game clubs and even in some classrooms to build spatial reasoning skills.
