Since 1990, Abalone has been sliding black and white marbles across a hexagonal board, and the concept still hasn't aged a day. Each player pushes a line of marbles in an attempt to eject six of the opponent's marbles off the board. The rules take about two minutes to learn: a line of marbles can only push another line if it outnumbers it. But under that simplicity lies a chess-like depth, where every move shifts the balance of power and opens (or closes) a gap in your own defense.

You'll probably love Abalone if you're after a pure abstract strategy game, quick to set up, with no luck and no text to read, where reading the board is what separates winning from losing.

Right from its 1990 release, Abalone earned one of the very first Mensa Select honors, awarded that same year to classics like Trivial Pursuit and Scattergories. The game had already won over a jury of game creators a few years earlier by taking the Concours international de créateurs de jeux de société. Since then, more than 4.5 million copies have sold across some thirty countries, a rare longevity for an abstract strategy game.

Designed by French creators Michel Lalet and Laurent Levi, Abalone remains their best-known creation and keeps being reprinted decade after decade without its rules ever changing.
