Welcome to 12th-century England, where the Sheriff of Nottingham and his henchmen crush the peasants under heavy taxes. In A Gest of Robin Hood, a two-player wargame, one side plays Robin Hood and his Merry Men, who rob the rich and encourage peasant disobedience. The other side leads the Sheriff and his Henchmen, tasked with keeping the peace and collecting taxes for Prince John.
On your turn, you play Plots, Deeds and Events to recruit and move your forces, influence or control the population, raise funds and rob travellers and merchants. Everything comes down to the position of the red Royal Favour cylinder on the Justice/Order track. If the final Royal Inspection arrives with no winner, victory goes to the side the cylinder is on. It is a tense asymmetric duel with influence over regions, hidden movement and a good dose of pushing your luck.
A Gest of Robin Hood is for you if you enjoy two-player showdowns where each side plays very differently, if the legend of Robin Hood fires your imagination, or if you want to discover wargames with a game that wraps up in about an hour. Experienced players will also find a tight challenge.
The game is the second box in the Irregular Conflicts Series, which adapts the COIN system into a simpler format and a more approachable setting. It was nominated in 2024 for Golden Geek awards in the Best Wargame and Best 2-Player Board Game categories, as well as for the Charles S. Roberts award for Best Medieval Game.
The game is designed by Fred Serval, whose first published game, Red Flag Over Paris, came out at the end of 2021. The artwork is by Robert Altbauer, Terry Leeds and Chechu Nieto.
