Monumental (EN)

In Monumental, you take command of an ancient civilization determined to leave its mark on history. Your city unfolds as a 3x3 grid of cards drawn from your starting deck: each one can be activated to gather Science, Military, Production, Culture, or Gold. The catch: you can't activate every card at once, so each turn forces tough choices about which cards you truly need.
The resources you gather let you acquire new cards from a shared common pool: upgraded buildings, technologies, wonders, and more, turning your deck-building into an ever-stronger economic engine. As turns pass, the game moves through eras: Classical cards give way to Medieval, then Industrial cards, each more powerful... and more expensive to obtain.
A modular board at the center of the table holds every civilization's army. This territory is divided into provinces held by barbarians who yield resources to whoever defeats them by conquering provinces. Holding a conquered province also brings victory points, adding real military tension to the race for development.
At the end of the game, the most impressive civilization is remembered for all time, and its builder wins.
Monumental is for you if you love decision-heavy strategy games where building an efficient card engine matters just as much as defending your territory. Fans of 4X games packed into a single box, without the weight of a multi-hour epic, will be right at home: games run 90 to 120 minutes while still delivering real tactical depth.
Monumental includes a full solo mode powered by Automa cards, perfect for practicing your strategy before facing other players. Five distinct historical civilizations (China, Denmark, Egypt, Greece, and Japan) are included right in the core box, each with its own cards and strategic approach. Several expansions, including Lost Kingdoms and African Empires, add new peoples and new mechanics to the game.
Monumental was designed by Australian game designer Matthew Dunstan, also behind Guild of Merchant Explorers and Next Station: London, two games widely praised for their accessible depth. You'll find the same signature here: rules that are quick to pick up, but that leave room for demanding strategic choices.
