Hilaire is the captain of the Courageux, a ten-foot sailboat that has never left the Académie de Magie lake. He gets seasick in puddles. His crew: two ducks, paid in bread. But Hilaire has a big captain’s hat, a booming voice and one certainty: he is the greatest sailor in the kingdom. He tells everyone. The ducks don’t contradict him.
One morning, a bottle washed up on the shore of the lake. Nobody knows how it got there: the lake isn’t connected to any sea. Inside was a message in gold letters: “To the greatest captain in the kingdom. You are invited to be crowned Roi Triton, King Triton, master of the tides, for one day, at the Grand Bal des Profondeurs.” Hilaire read it three times. Then he told the ducks: “Pack my bags.”
(The Dungeon Master, checking their notes: the bottle was meant for Captain Barbe-Grise, the old pirate with three wooden legs. It had taken a wrong turn. Hilaire knows it. He decided that was a detail.)
The trip to the sea took a week. Hilaire got seasick in a puddle, in a river, in a stream and in a bucket. When he arrived at the Grand Bal des Profondeurs, he was green. They put a coral crown on his head and a trident in his hand. The mermaids sang. The fish clapped their fins. Then they asked him to do what a King Triton does: command the tides.
Hilaire raised his trident. In a very small voice, he said: “Sea… calm down. Please.” And the sea calmed down. Completely. Flat as a lake. For the first time in history, there wasn’t a single wave anywhere. Hilaire didn’t feel sick all evening.
(The Dungeon Master, with a smirk: he’s the only King Triton ever asked to stay a second day. The kingdom’s sailors have never had such a smooth crossing. The pirates, on the other hand, complained: it’s impossible to scare anyone on a flat sea.)
As he left, they gave him a souvenir: seven ocean blue and turquoise dice, sparkling like the surface of the water, with white numbers. The Roi Triton dice (“King Triton”) were born. They’re perfect for sailors, kings for a day and players who give their dice orders. Politely.
In shimmering ocean blue and turquoise acrylic with white numbers, these polyhedral dice are perfect for your Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder or any roleplaying game (RPG). A royal, seafaring dice set. Seasickness not included.
