Bonbons sûrs Dice - 7D Set

Kevin is eight years old, he’s a wizard, and he once emptied the archmage’s candy stash. Since then, candy has been kept under lock and key at the Académie de Magie. Except one day a year: Halloween. And this year, Madame Mani Naan, the dwarf cook who runs the cafeteria, had an idea.

“This year,” she announced, “we’re handing out bonbons sûrs.” Safe candies. No hidden spells, no sugar that makes you fly, no singing licorice. Candies in seven layered colours, red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple, kept in a glass jar. One per student. Kevin heard the word “candies.” He didn’t hear the word “safe.”

(The Dungeon Master, from behind the screen: he stole forty. He put them all in his mouth. At the same time. Madame Naan watched him do it without moving. She knew.)

You see, in French, “sûrs” means safe, but “surs” means sour. Madame Naan’s candies aren’t just safe. They’re sour. Very, very sour. Each layer is more acidic than the last, and the final one, the purple one, tastes like a lemon that’s mad at you personally. Kevin made a face that lasted eleven minutes. His ears turned inside out. His hair curled, uncurled, then curled again.

Then something happened that had never happened at the Academy before: Kevin sat down. He stayed still. He didn’t run, didn’t shout, didn’t throw a single fireball. He spent the rest of the evening on a bench, staring into space, saying “phew” every now and then.

(The Dungeon Master, with a smirk: it was the calmest Halloween in the Academy’s history. The teachers asked for the recipe. Madame Naan now keeps a jar of bonbons sûrs on her desk. When she says “Kevin, my office,” he walks over. Slowly.)

At the bottom of the jar were seven candies that even Kevin hadn’t dared to touch: striped in every colour, frosted like sour sugar, with white numbers.
