Sire Sigismond, 87 years old, knight, speaks of himself in the third person. “Sire Sigismond is hungry.” “Sire Sigismond’s knees hurt.” And above all: “Sire Sigismond never does anything halfway.”

So when he received an invitation to the baron’s grand ball, with “Formal attire required” in small print at the bottom, Sire Sigismond took it very seriously. Too seriously. Gold-leafed armour. A twelve-metre velvet cape. An ostrich plume on his helmet. A second plume on the first plume. And buckled shoes that played a little tune with every step.

(The Dungeon Master, checking their notes: it took two squires to carry the cape and a third for the plume. The horse refused to leave the stable. It was embarrassed.)

At the manor’s entrance, Sire Sigismond pulled out the highlight of the evening: a giant D20, as big as an apple, turquoise and swirled like a mountain lake, with gold numbers. “Sire Sigismond,” he announced, “does not dance without a die worthy of him.” He planned to roll it to choose his dance partner. The whole room went silent.

He rolled the die. The die rolled across the polished floor. It rolled under the tables. It rolled between the baron’s legs. It rolled all the way to the kitchens, with Sire Sigismond behind it, and behind Sire Sigismond, the cape, the squires, the plumes and the music of the shoes. The die stopped in a dish of custard. On a 20.

The cook fished out the die, wiped it on her apron and handed it to Sire Sigismond. He looked at her. She looked at him. The 20 had spoken. They danced all night, in the kitchen, to the music of the shoes.

(The Dungeon Master, with a smirk: the baron says it was the best ball of his life, even though he didn’t see a single guest: they were all in the kitchen. Sire Sigismond says Sire Sigismond got lucky. The cook says she would have said yes on a 2.)
