Ducat is a prospector in the mines of Creuse-Fond. For thirty years, he has found nothing but pyrite: fools’ gold, yellow, shiny and perfectly useless. He finds so much of it that Zahira, the stingiest merchant in the sands of Arrakis, buys it from him by the kilo and resells it with a label: “Guaranteed 100% fake.”

One morning, deep in tunnel number 7, Ducat swung his pick and a nugget as big as an egg dropped into his hand. Pearly yellow. Heavy. Warm. He bit it. His teeth went “tink.” It was real gold. The first of his life.

(The Dungeon Master, from behind the screen: Ducat ran all the way to the village shouting “GOLD! REAL GOLD!” Nobody looked up. The blacksmith said, “Sure, sure, Ducat.” The blacksmith’s dog yawned.)

He showed the nugget to the whole village. The banker laughed. The jeweller laughed harder. The priest told him to get some rest. So Ducat did the only thing he could: he went to see Zahira. Zahira looked at the nugget for a very long minute. Then she said: “Pyrite. I’ll give you two coins for it.” Ducat sold. He was too tired to argue.

The next day, the nugget sat proudly on Zahira’s stall with a new label: “Or pour les fous. Gold for fools. Guaranteed 100% real. 400 coins.” And that’s when the miracle happened: nobody bought it. Customers laughed. “Real gold, at Zahira’s? She must think we’re fools!” The nugget stayed on the stall all summer. In the end, Zahira had it cut into seven little dice, just to make the shelf space pay off.

(The Dungeon Master, with a smirk: Ducat still has his two coins. Zahira has seven gold dice she can’t sell to anyone, because everyone knows she sells fakes. For the first time in her life, she lost money. She says it’s Ducat’s fault.)

The Or pour les fous dice (“gold for fools”) were born.
