Kalypso is a tile-laying survival game set in a world where the sea has swallowed the entire surface of the Earth. All that remains are platforms of rusted metal and driftwood, and it's up to you to build a floating settlement from whatever you can salvage. Each round, you draft salvage tiles, fit them together on your Ocean board, bring buildings to life by matching resource symbols, set up fishing areas in enclosed gaps and guide your survivors through the storms announced by the Forecast cards.

Depending on the mood of your game night, you can play solo, as a cooperative game or competitively. Modular objectives and escalating difficulty make every game a new challenge: in cooperative or solo play, you must keep your survivors alive through four rounds of forecasts; in competitive play, buildings, survivors and objectives drive your score.

You will probably enjoy Kalypso if you like placement puzzles where every tile counts, if you want a tile-laying game that works as well alone as with four players, or if you are looking for a cooperative challenge where the pressure rises with every storm. It is a great pick for players who love optimizing their space and planning a few turns ahead.

Fun fact: the boards are covered with a felt-like textured coating (HoldFast) that grips the pieces in place, so your settlement does not drift at the slightest bump of the elbow. The game also exists in French and German editions.

Kalypso was designed by Gilles Turbide, and its world of sea and rust comes to life through the illustrations of Amelia Sales.
