The game of Canasta is said to have originated in Montevideo, Uruguay around 1940. From there it spread to Argentina, the United States and all over the world. It was extremely fashionable in the 1950s, for a time threatening to supplant contract bridge as the premier card game.
The rules were standardized in North America around 1950 and it was this version of the game that gained popularity around the world. In many countries the canasta is still played more or less in its original form, sometimes with a number of variations. In North America, however, the game of Canasta continued to grow, and the version favored by many American players today, called Modern American Canasta, is very different from the classic game.
It is generally accepted that Canasta is the best game for four players, playing in partnership. However, there are playable versions for two, three or six players.
La Canasta is a playing card game with a standard deck, modified by the addition of two decks and the addition of the four Jokers.
