It all began in a magical city where there were already far too many signposts and the rules were, at best, open to interpretation.
At the heart of the city stood the Crossroads of Important Decisions, a solemn place where heroes came to choose their fate. Turn left to save the kingdom. Go straight to face the dragon. Turn right for a harmless side quest that absolutely would not spiral out of control.
One evening, three figures arrived at the crossroads at the exact same time. A distracted mage reading his map upside down. A cartographer convinced that north had recently moved. And an apprentice blacksmith who kept insisting, “No no, it’s fine, I’m allowed to turn here.”
They debated. For a long time. Far too long.
Someone flipped a coin to decide. Someone else suggested drawing cards. The mage, mildly offended, cast a spell of Absolute Clarification… backwards.
That was the precise moment magic did what it always does when rushed: it improvised.
The spell collapsed into the blacksmith’s crucible, pulling in shimmering dust from the crossroads, a generous amount of pure confusion, and just enough bad faith to make things interesting. Metal could not handle it. Acrylic could.
