In The Lord of the Rings: Circle of Conflict, the fate of the One Ring wavers between good and evil. It is the Third Age of Middle-earth, and a great war is unfolding between the many nations. This strategic dice game puts you in charge of both sides at once: you command the Shadow and the Free Peoples, and you face the players seated on either side of you.
Everyone plays at the same time. Each round, you roll the dice, split the results between your two sides on your dry-erase player board, then announce some actions in public while others stay secret. Your Free Peoples fight the Shadow of your left-hand neighbor, and your Shadow fights the Free Peoples of your right-hand neighbor. You need to manage your dice, anticipate your neighbors' moves and try to guess where their Fellowship is hiding. The Free Peoples win by leading the Fellowship to Mount Doom or by winning battles; the Shadow wins by fully corrupting the Fellowship or by winning battles. The highest score wins.
You will probably enjoy The Lord of the Rings: Circle of Conflict if you are looking for a light strategy game with dice rolling, lots of interaction, bluffing and prediction, and if Tolkien's universe makes your heart race. Fans of roll-and-write games will enjoy marking off icons, with a battle of wits at every table.
The game was created by Stephen Buonocore and Geoff Engelstein, and it carries the official Lord of the Rings license. The Ring board in the middle of the table and the wooden Gollum token remind you every round that the quest could tip at any moment.
