Root: The Homeland Expansion carries the fight for the Woodland into brand-new territory. This major expansion for Root, the celebrated asymmetric strategy series, adds three new factions and two new game boards to your base copy. The Lilypad Diaspora, a nation of frogs scattered for generations, arrives in the Woodland and must choose between peaceful integration and armed militancy, reshaping clearing suits on the map as their presence grows. The Twilight Council, led by politically minded bats, calls assemblies that lock down entire clearings and cut opponents off from building, recruiting, and spreading sympathy. The Knaves of the Deepwood, a band of outlaw skunks, take enemy warriors hostage for ransom, forcing even the largest armies to rethink their plans. Rounding things out are the Marsh map, built to finally make six-player games run smoothly with extra clearings, and the Gorge map, packed with unusual connections that favor the sly Marquise de Cat.
You'll likely love Root: The Homeland Expansion if you already own the base game and feel like you've been running the same factions in circles for too long. This expansion is built for experienced groups who want fresh dynamics, finally stable five and six-player games, and new ways to negotiate, threaten, and outmaneuver their opponents.
Several reviewers call Homeland the best expansion ever released for Root: specialty site Meeple Mountain gives it a perfect score and calls it a must-have for anyone who already owns other expansions of the game. It also fixes a long-standing pain point for the series: the Marsh map finally makes six-player games enjoyable, addressing what had long been considered the format's weakest link.
The three new factions come from Joshua Yearsley, who has developed and edited Root's rules since its very first edition, while the Gorge map was created by popular Root content creator S.W. Smith, better known in the community as Lord of the Board. Illustrator Kyle Ferrin, whose distinctive style has defined Root's look since day one, once again handles the visuals for this expansion.
This expansion doesn't play on its own: you'll need a copy of the Root: A Game of Woodland Might and Right base game to use it.
