Wonderland is restless: the Queen of Hearts rules on a whim, and rebellion is brewing. In Qu'on leur coupe la tête (FR), a travel-size two-player card game, you send your soldiers to recruit iconic characters from the tale and overthrow the regime. There are two ways to win: form the most powerful group, or successfully paint three white rosebushes red, the symbol that will spark the revolution.
A game lasts 3 rounds and an epilogue. Three cards are placed face up between the players, and each player is dealt 7 cards. On each turn, you both choose and reveal a card at the same time: the highest is played first, then the second applies its power. Cards are placed in front of one of the 3 squares, which offer 3, 2 and 1 spaces per side. When everything is filled, the Queen first discards the cards with the highest value, then the player with the highest total on each side wins the cards. Every card has a special power that leads to plenty of surprises. In the final count, only the lowest value in each suit matters: it multiplies the number of cards you won in that suit. For example, with a 2 of spades as your lowest and 3 spades, you score 2 x 3 = 6 points.
Qu'on leur coupe la tête is for you if you want a quick duel game that hits the table in 15 minutes, with tight choices, bluffing and anticipation on every turn. You will probably enjoy this little microgame if you like the world of Alice in Wonderland, games that chain easily from one round to the next, and games that slip easily into a travel bag.
This game is a travel-format microgame drawn from the world of Lewis Carroll (BoardGameGeek lists it among novel-based games) and made for duels: it plays with exactly two players. It is designed by Bruno Cathala, whose credits include Kingdomino and 7 Wonders Duel, and Florian Sirieix, with illustrations by Ben Basso.
