Welcome to Arzium, a fantastical land full of strange creatures, mysterious ruins, and colorful characters. A strange sleeping sickness has swept across the realm: every creature now wanders aimlessly for miles, lost in a sleepwalking daze. In Périple (FR), also released internationally as Roam, your mission is to seek out these lost souls, wake them up, and recruit them to your party before your rivals do (up to three of them).

The board is rebuilt every game: Terrain/Character cards form a shifting grid that you search tile by tile to reveal the adventurer hiding underneath. On your turn, you activate one of the characters in your party to place exploration markers in the pattern shown on their card. Once a card has been fully searched, whoever placed the most markers claims the adventurer, banking points along with a brand new search pattern for future turns. This ever-changing territory majority forces you to rethink your plan with every card revealed.

Searching the terrain also earns coins, which you can spend on unique artifacts or special actions. The game ends as soon as one player has recruited ten adventurers into their party, and whoever has the most points wins. The box builds in three optional rule modules from the start, ones you can mix and match freely, so you can keep the experience fresh without buying a separate expansion.

You will probably enjoy Périple (FR) if you love family strategy games where the board changes every session, if you like timing your moves to claim a tile at just the right moment, and if the idea of building a party of colorful characters pulled from the world of Arzium appeals to you. Its reasonable length and easy to teach rules also make it a great pick for introducing the family to meatier majority mechanics.

Fun fact: the adventurer cards in Périple (FR) bring back characters from Near and Far, Above and Below, and Islebound, other games from the same creative universe. The game has also gathered more than 4,800 ratings on BoardGameGeek for an average score close to 7.3 out of 10, placing it among the site's top rated family games. The character recruitment mechanism, paired with rediscovering the board every game, goes a long way toward explaining that popularity.

Périple (FR) is designed by Ryan Laukat, who also illustrated it himself, a rare combination that gives the game a very cohesive visual identity. He is also behind several other beloved games from the same universe, including Near and Far, Above and Below, and Islebound, as well as Sleeping Gods. The French edition is distributed by Lucky Duck Games.
