*French version
In Overboss (FR), you play a fearsome dungeon boss finally stepping out of your lair to conquer the world above. Each turn, you draft terrain tiles - forests, swamps, caves, camps, graveyards, dungeon entrances - and place monster tokens to build the most powerful map at the table. This strategy game blends tile drafting and set collection into a system that is easy to learn yet full of meaningful decisions: every terrain type scores differently, some grow in value as your sets get bigger, and your monsters score big when grouped together or placed on matching terrain. Boss cards add unique powers, Command cards spice up player interaction, and the solo mode with its unlockable campaign keeps you busy even without an opponent. It all unfolds in a retro world inspired by 16-bit video games, with charming pixel art illustrations that nod to classic dungeon crawlers from gaming's golden console era.
Overboss is for you if you love tile-laying games that play fast but still ask for real long-term thinking, much like Calico. You will also fall for it if the pixel art takes you straight back to your favorite video games, if you are after a solo game that wraps up in 20 to 30 minutes, or if you want something easy to teach for game night without giving up strategic depth.
Fun fact: in France, Overboss carries the subtitle Votre monde en 16 bit (Your 16-bit World), a direct nod to the retro video game look dressing every tile and token in the game. The title was also born from a crowdfunding campaign that blew past its goals, proof of how loyal fans of the Boss Monster universe really are.
Overboss is designed by Aaron Mesburne and Kevin Russ, the latter well known among tile-laying fans for creating Calico, the quilt-and-cats game that won over tables everywhere. The pixel art is the work of Darren Calvert and Juan Alberto Hernandez, who bring this colorful, nostalgic dungeon world to life.
