*French version
On a resource-starved Victorian Earth, probes have detected two minerals on Mars that could change everything: celerium, an energy source ten thousand times more powerful than steam, and sylvanite, the densest substance ever found. Add in ice deposits that could make terraforming possible, and you understand why every mining company in the galaxy is racing toward the red planet. In Mission Red Planet (FR), you take charge of one of these rival companies, determined to seize these riches before anyone else.
Over ten rounds, you secretly deploy one of your nine specialists: each one determines both the order in which you load your astronauts onto the spaceships bound for Mars and the special action you can trigger. Once an astronaut lands on the planet, the resource hidden there is finally revealed, and majorities are contested region by region. Resources are counted three times during the game, and a secret Mission card can make all the difference at final scoring.
This new edition keeps the mechanics that made the original game a hit, while introducing a modular board that changes the layout of Mars every game. The mood shifts away from the Victorian steampunk of the earlier editions toward a bold, modern science-fiction look, carried by brand-new artwork.
You'll probably love Mission Red Planet if you thrive on bluffing games where reading your opponents' intentions matters as much as your own strategy. Games are fast, tense and full of twists: perfect for a night with friends or family, with no downtime and real decisions every turn. Fans of area control, hand management and well-timed sabotage will be right at home.
This new edition marks the 20th anniversary of the original 2005 release and the 10th anniversary of the 2015 revamp: Mission Red Planet changes its look for the third time, leaving steampunk behind for good in favor of a bold science-fiction aesthetic. The modular board, a first for the series, lets the layout of the zones and the game's unpredictability vary from one session to the next. On BoardGameGeek, this cult classic remains a collection staple: over 12,000 players give it an average rating close to 7.4 out of 10.
Mission Red Planet is designed by Bruno Cathala and Bruno Faidutti, two of the most respected names in French board game design. Cathala's other credits include Kingdomino and Five Tribes, while Faidutti has shaped generations of gamers with Citadels and Incan Gold. The brand-new artwork comes from Derek Stenning, a veteran video game industry artist who worked at Nintendo and Microsoft, bringing a distinctly science-fiction atmosphere to Mars.
